I try to open App that doesn't download from App Store and it show: “App” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash. In the El Cap. I can change the privacy, but no choice in Sierra any idea? I try to right click and 'Open' but not solve this. Oct 27, 2012  Topic SeaDAS / SeaDAS 7 - General Questions / Can't install, installer is 'damaged and can't be opened' (locked) By gpark Date 2012-10-26 08:57 I cant seem to install SeaDAS so let me make sure I'm doing this right. I don't know if it really is damaged or if it has just been modified in a way that triggers the Gatekeeper warning but that is something that I as an end-user should not have to try to figure out. If Linkysys/Cisco wants biz from Mac owners, they need to get w the program so that they stuff works w current Mac OS! I have a mounted directory to access some images. When opening an image for the first time with open /mounteddir/foo.jpg it opens the image in preview. When repeating the same command it gives the error: /mounteddir/foo.jpg is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash. I then opened the.zip file, but after I put Minecraft into Applications and tried to open it, it said: 'Minecraft' is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash. I have no idea what caused this. Any help would be appreciated.

Mac OS X security by default does not allow all .app extensions to be installed. At worst, it will throw an error message that the app “is damaged and can’t be opened.” This error makes you believe that the downloaded app is corrupted and that there is no application that could let it open. However, sometimes this is just a security issue that can be corrected.

Users are seeing warning messages about downloaded applications being damaged and unable to be opened. Sometimes is due to a true corruption during download. These days download corruption is very rare, and more frequently this is a due to Apple’s increasing security measures. If you are trying to open an application that did not install through the Apple App Store, you likely just need to adjust your security preferences.

Open Applications Downloaded from the Internet

1.Go to the Apple icon, and chose System Preferences.

2.Under System Preferences, choose Security & Privacy.

3.Choose the General tab. By default, Mac OS X security allows only the apps that are downloaded from the Mac App Store (such as iTunes) or from Mac certified developers. Although it is safe to install apps that Apple recommends, there are always scenarios in which you will need to download .app files from the Internet.

4.To fix the “Move to Trash” error, we need to change the Allow apps downloaded from: option to Anywhere. You cannot do that since it is grayed out and disabled. It needs authentication from an administrator. To do that, click on the lock icon next to Click the lock to make changes. That should open a dialog box asking you to enter your password. If you have not set your password, just leave it blank, and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.

5.Now, select the Anywhere radio button. Once you choose that, it should open up another dialog box as seen below. Just chose Allow From Anywhere. Now, you can simply close all the windows, and Mac will automatically lock Security & Privacy for you.

6.Open the .app file that you want to be installed. Instead of the error message, now it will give you a warning telling you that this app is downloaded from the internet and asking would you still like to open it. If you are sure about what you are installing, just click Open, and it should let you install it without any error.

If you are working on Mac OS X 10.9.2 or newer, you may see a message about a software installer being damaged when you try to launch it. e.g. saying the software 'is damaged and can't be opened. You should eject the disk image' or that the software 'is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.'

Newer Mac systems include a security setting that can block the installation of apps downloaded from places other than the Mac App Store. To install QIAGEN software, you need to allow apps downloaded from identified developers as well the Mac App Store. Do this by adjusting your security settings:

  1. Go to System Preferences Security & Privacy
  2. Click on the padlock icon at the lower-left corner to enable you to make changes.
  3. Choose 'App Store and identified developers'

We sign our software with a Developer ID from Apple. With the above setting chosen, you should be able to install our software. You will see a message warning you that the software has been downloaded from the internet, and asking if you wish to open it. This is expected, and you can proceed with installing the software.

Security settings affect your whole system. If you generally do not want to allow apps downloaded from anywhere except the App Store, then change the security settings back to the desired setting after you have finished installing your QIAGEN software.

If you continue to see this issue with the 'Allow apps downloaded from' option set to 'App Store and identified developers', please report this problem by emailing AdvancedGenomicsSupport@qiagen.com Please include the full name of the installer, when you downloaded it and the URL of the page you visited to download it from.

If you wish to proceed with installation anyway

If you are certain you obtained the installer via official channels and thus wish to proceed with installation anyway, information on how to do so is below.

  4. Close the security settings window
  5. Double click on the installer file again and click the Open button when prompted.

We recommend reverting your security settings after installation of the software is complete.

Mac OS Sierra 10.12.x

The premise is the same as shown for Mac OS 10.9.2 through 10.11.x except that the steps to enable the 'Anywhere' option are different.

If you view your security settings under System Preferences Security & Privacy, you will see there is no Anywhere option.
